Can you rent a car in Cuba?

Cuba’s official tourism portal lists car-rental services in Havana and other destinations. That establishes that renting a car is possible; it does not establish that a particular vehicle, airport desk or rate is available for your trip.

Plan the request

Start with dates, route and category—not a model promise.

State the intended pickup and return areas, calendar dates, time windows, passenger count, broad luggage needs and transmission preference. If pickup and return differ, include both places so any one-way condition can be checked.

Vehicle labels are comparison categories. Ask whether the written offer confirms a class, a named model or an equivalent, and whether passenger and luggage guidance fits the trip.

Driver eligibility

Carry a valid driving licence and verify the provider’s exact rules.

The official Cuba tourism information for Varadero states that a driving licence is required. It does not provide one universal rule on minimum age, licence tenure, international permits or additional drivers for every provider.

Before paying, ask the provider to confirm which original licence and identity documents each driver must present, whether an International Driving Permit or translation is required for that licence, and every age or additional-driver condition.

Before accepting

Get the complete rental terms in writing.

• Confirmed category, transmission and the meaning of any equivalent vehicle.
• Exact pickup and return instructions, including what happens after a late or changed arrival.
• Total amount, currency, accepted payment method and any deposit or card requirement.
• Insurance included, exclusions, excess or liability, and the incident-reporting procedure.
• Fuel, mileage, additional-driver, one-way, extension and cancellation conditions.
• Roadside-assistance contact and what support the rental contract actually includes.

Time-sensitive checks

Review fuel, power and road conditions close to departure.

Current foreign-travel advice reports serious fuel and power disruption in Cuba. Conditions can change faster than a permanent guide can be updated, so check official advice, the planned route and the rental provider again immediately before travel.

Government road-safety guidance also warns about potholes, limited signage, dark roads during blackouts and the elevated risk of driving outside major cities at night. Plan conservative driving hours and do not assume that a familiar-looking route has familiar road conditions.
